5 common mistakes people might make when using the law of attraction

You need a 7 Day Brainwash1. Believing that positive thinking is enough to attract what you want

Positive thinking occurs only on the conscious level; this is why positive thinking alone is not enough to be able to use the law of attraction. It is necessary for belief to enter the subconscious as well.

As we have seen earlier, the mind is always operating on two levels; the subconscious and the conscious. The conscious mind is being given hundreds of tidbits of information at any given time from all five senses. This is an incredible amount of information to process, even from such an advanced tool as the human brain. The mind would slowly go crazy if it had to deal with all of that information all of the time.

Instead, the mind developed the conscious mind, which serves as a filter to review the information sent to it by the senses and retain anything that it deems important. Anything that it does not deem important is passed along to the subconscious. It is the subconscious which will retain this information, acting as the guardian of repressed memories until such time as those memories are needed again.

It has long been held that the subconscious has a direct effect on the actions and beliefs of the conscious mind; if the conscious mind is attempting to think positive thoughts while the subconscious retains a negative energy the two will cancel each other out, and the desired effect will not be achieved.

2. Becoming impatient

The universe works at its own speed; remember, every action carries with it an equal and opposite reaction. Your desire will manifest in the universe’s timeframe rather than yours! It could even be that the universe knows that you are not yet ready to receive your desire.

This means that the law of attraction may take weeks, months or even years to bring about your desires. People of today’s society are spoiled; they want their desires right now. They expect instant results.

When they don’t manifest immediately, people then start to doubt; disbelieving in the law of attraction because it does not manifest your desires immediately is a direct violation of the guidelines required to see them manifested. If you were confident in its ability to deliver the desired results you would be content to sit and wait, knowing that what you want will come to you in time.

On the other hand, the fact that you are not indicates that you do not have confidence in its ability to bring about the desired results. This means that somewhere in your being is a small kernel of negative energy, sufficient to throw a monkey wrench into the whole process of manifestation. Remember, if you are vibrating negative energy you will attract negative energy back onto yourself.

3. Determining ahead of time how and when you will attract what you want

Let the universe do its work! It is possible to become so focused on what you think is going to happen that you manage to totally miss the event when it occurs if it does not occur in precisely the manner you pictured it would.

As we said before, the universe will choose its own time and place for all things to occur, and these events may take place through rather unusual means. By trying to plan exactly how you will receive the desire which you want you are taking away the choice from the universe. For example you may want to make $10,000 in sales and picture yourself talking to a prospect and closing the sale. This is in conflict with the law of attraction, as it is not possible to manifest your desires by attempting to manipulate another person into doing something, even buying from you. The correct way of manifesting this goal would be to focus on the $10,000 and what benefits this money would bring you, and leave the method of getting it to the universe.

Another thing to be aware of is by trying to plan too much yourself you are essentially saying that you don’t have faith in the ability of the law of attraction to deliver the desired results in time. By setting your own timeline for events to occur you will eventually come to disbelieve in the law of attraction (after all, it didn’t do what it was supposed to, did it?), which will cause your subconscious to radiate the negative energy which will drive the positive energy away.

4. Allowing your emotions to be led by external evidence

In order to reap the full benefits of the law of attraction you need to believe that what you see now is a result of what you have been attracting to this point; again, it is essential that you realize that what has occurred in your life to this date and what will happen later on is determined by you. Whatever successes or failures you have experienced have been the result of the thought energies that your mind and body have released out into the universe.

It is very easy to look at the events of your life and think, “I certainly didn’t want that to happen; the law of attraction must be untrue because I would never wish for something so awful.” What you have to realize is that it is not always what your conscious mind wishes for that influences what your subconscious mind is projecting.

This leads us to the fifth most common mistake;

5. Not removing limiting beliefs

There are many occasions in which people fall into a self defeating cycle because they are unable to control the thoughts and attitudes of their subconscious mind. A common argument against the law of attraction is, “Why is there so much suffering in the world if people have the ability to determine the events of their life?” These people have not chosen a life of starvation and servitude; however, due to their history many of them do not truly believe that they have any choice.

This disbelief in their ability to change their circumstances because “it is the way that it’s always been” means that they will continue to live this way. Their subconscious continues to project that disbelief and negative energy out into the universe, drawing back negative energy which will cause them to continue to live in this self destructive cycle of events.

It is those who have dared to dream, and believe in the possibilities presented by these dreams, who have effected the greatest changes in the world. If Henry Ford had not truly believed that man could ride in a car, do you think that the Model T could have been invented? If women really believed that they were destined to live the rest of their life under the thumb of their fathers and husbands, with no say in the lives they would lead, would women’s liberation have occurred?

The removal of limiting beliefs such as these is absolutely vital to the ability of the law of attraction to work as it is intended to. If you truly feel that the law of attraction is not working for you, take a moment to consider the things that you are wishing for. Do you truly believe that you can have them, or does a part of you feel that it’s impossible? Do you secretly believe that you don’t deserve to have them?

In order to project the positive vibes which are necessary to draw the energies of the universe to you it is essential that you are one hundred percent confident in your ability to effect a change and are willing to believe that all of the events occurring up to that point have been a necessary prerequisite to bringing these events to be.

The simple key to the law of attraction is the ACCEPTANCE of YOUR responsibility.

I wish you complete success in manifesting all you desire.

Think differently

You need a 7 Day BrainwashYou know how sometimes things can just stick in your mind? Even things you’ve heard before? It reminds me of that old adage, “When the pupil is ready, the teacher will appear.” It’s as though you just weren’t ready for the deeper meaning of something to sink in until this moment.

Something like that happened to me over vacation. Although I’ve heard it before, this time it just stuck. And the phrase was: “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got.”

It’s so simple. And I realized for the first time, (like I could kick myself for not thinking of this before!), that in some areas of my life, what I’ve always done is think the same thoughts. Or the same style of thoughts. So I come to the same old conclusions, with the same underlying beliefs and the same doubts and fears, and guess what? Same old results.

So I resolved to train my brain. Before you can get different results you gotta think different thoughts. And you’ve got to cultivate certainty. I’m hot on this one in my seminars. Elimination of doubt and cultivation of certainty about anything … and sure as eggs is eggs you’ll get what you’re certain of.

Do it with feeling. Real emotion. Get excited, anticipate a miracle. E-motion = energy in motion. Energy in motion is life!

So it’s best to be sure that you’re not certain that it doesn’t work – if you catch my drift.

To get what you truly desire, expect it with all your heart!

Track your progress

You need a 7 Day Brainwash“What get measured gets managed.” — Peter Drucker

The beginning of a new year is a time where we all sit down and determine once and for all that we are going to change. We’ve failed our resolutions in years past, but not this time. Right?

If this describes your thought process, the odds are drastically against you. Most of us live our lives primarily through habit. Hundreds (actually more likely thousands) of little habits determine our moment by moment choices and ultimately our results in life.

Making permanent change usually requires a lot more than a simple new year’s declaration. And the key is becoming aware of the changes you want to make.

Enter the fun and exciting world of statistical measurement. Okay, even as a Math major I find the idea of stats and data completely boring. Or at least I DID find it boring until I read the quote at the beginning of this article.

The truth is, when you begin to measure anything, the simple act of observation will begin to impact the results.

In 2007 I was on a mission to change my life, build up the courage to quit my job and start my own business. This required a total re-engineering of my thought patters, beliefs and behaviours. Without knowing it at the time, I actually used precise measurement and analysis to drive my permanent lifestyle change.

For a period of 100+ days, I tracked almost every single activity I performed in a day. This included everything from work, to checking Facebook (back when nobody knew Facebook), to grocery shopping. What this allowed me to do was evaluate my actions and focus more time and energy on activities that ultimately moved me towards my goal of being an independent entrepreneur.

If I engaged in a goal-destroying activity (like watching TV instead of working on my new business), I had to write it down on my activity list. Of course, I didn’t want to write these destructive activities down so my “list” became my control mechanism. Instead of discipline and wishful thinking, I had a practical, tangible solution to changing my life.

In hindsight, I now realize that this simple system can be used to activate any change you want in your life. From losing weight to increasing productivity to improving relationships, measure the activities and instantly bring a new awareness that provokes positive change.

Your task. Go to the dollar store, buy a simple 3-subject notebook and begin tracking “some” data that is impacting your life. It could be a food/exercise journal, it could be a list of all “time wasters” that are hurting your success. Make sure you have a specific goal in mind and then track your improvements as you track your activities. The small changes in numbers will have a large impact on your life.

Share Your Goals for Success

You need a 7 Day BrainwashMost people have a laundry list of ideas, goals, dreams and aspirations for their life. There are so many things they want to do but life gets in the way. The days, months and years pass by and many of those ideas never see the light of day.

There is a little technique you can use, if you have the courage, that will almost guarantee the achievement of big goals and dreams. It is based on the idea of “social pressure”.

Think about this; let’s say you have a goal to lose a certain amount of weight or achieve some desired level of fitness. You can set the goal privately and tell yourself, “I am going to achieve this goal by August 1.” On the other hand, you can make the goal public by telling all of your friends and family what you intend to do and even give a date for your desired completion.

As soon as you take that goal public, you move into a different state of mind. No longer are you at the mercy of your own self-discipline (which has been tarnished by years of bad habits). Now you have a much more powerful force dictating your day to day actions and decisions.

Is this method too aggressive?

Perhaps you’re thinking, what if I declare this goal to everyone and then fail to achieve it? It is a valid concern but let’s look at it in more detail.

If you set your goal, tell everyone about it and work hard towards the goal, only to fall a bit short, you are still in a better position than you were before setting the goal. Your results will have improved to some degree. You can move forward and set new goals from there.

However, if you set the goal, tell everyone about it and then take no action towards the goal, you have now put yourself in an embarrassing position. In my opinion, I think the pain of an event like that might be just the fuel you need to motivate yourself into action the next time around.

If the goal or dream you are aspiring for is important enough to you, I think this exercise would be extremely valuable to you and your life.

So how do you apply this to your life? Start by grabbing a pen and paper and simply brainstorm all of the things you would like to accomplish. Have fun with it and let your mind wander. Then, look at the most time sensitive goals. For example, the goal of becoming an expert guitar player may take years while the goal of quitting smoking can happen in a matter of days or weeks.

Pick a short term goal, set a date, declare the goal publicly and start working on it. You’ll be amazed at what happens!

Banish your self doubts

You need a 7 Day BrainwashSetting goals and planning your future is great of course but what happens if you start second guessing whether you are making the right choices in life? Do you suffer with self-doubts and anxieties as to whether you have it in you to succeed?

You’re not alone if you constantly experience those nagging doubts; they are a part of human nature and especially for those who do have low self-esteem but everyone will experience moments of hesitation and feelings of anxiousness. It’s how you deal with those feelings that are the most important.

It is possible to break out of this vicious cycle of negative thinking and with practice you can learn to control these dips in your confidence levels. There may be reasons of course why you are experiencing doubts and if there is a deep intrinsic reason as to why you are feeling less than confident, then this is something that you need to work through to be able to progress.

Sometimes we take on more than we can deal with. Sometimes we are thrown into situations where we have no way of coping and this can dent even the toughest of esteem levels. This additional and unwarranted pressure may have led to you doubting your own abilities.

Negative thoughts can chip away at your confidence, so stop them in their tracks and determine to think only positive thoughts. It’s not easy but it is achievable and the more that you do it, the better than you will feel.

Damaging self talk has probably been a part of you for many years so you have to realize that you won’t gain complete control for a while. But every time that you start thinking negatively, instead focus on something positive and think about all of the new opportunities for you that lies ahead.

Emotional hugs are something that can really give yourself a boost and if you can visualize yourself being cosseted and hugged and safe and secure, you will soon start to feel much better. Awareness of how you think and feel is vital if you are going to make changes because if you know that you are good at creating opportunities but bad at taking the risk of embracing those opportunities, then it’s obvious that you need to make changes and face your self-limitations.

Use competition to push you

You need a 7 Day BrainwashI don’t know about you but when I am put in a position where I’m competing against one or more people, my motivation shoots up to a whole new level. I have talked to many others who experience the same.

When you compete against someone, in any area of life, you setup 2 incredibly powerful forces.

The first is the desire to be triumphant. Imagine the excitement someone must feel when they win a gold medal in the Olympics. They have achieved a personal dream and they get a flood of recognition from friends, family, media, fans and ultimately their entire country. What person would not love this kind of validation of success? The same kind of triumph can be experienced (maybe not at the same level of intensity) when you win a competition that you have been involved in, no matter how small it may be.

The second (and more powerful) force that gets created in competition is the desire to avoid defeat. Most humans instinctively associate any form of loss with pain and in most cases, will do anything necessary to avoid that pain. If you enter some kind of competition that will help drive you towards your goals, this pain avoidance force may be the deciding factor in your success.

Use competitive scenarios to drive you forward but remember to detach from the outcome. If you happen to lose your competition, don’t get down in the dumps. Focus on what positives came out of it (usually a drastic increase in results) and continue moving towards your goals.

You need a personal place to unwind and de-stress

You need a 7 Day BrainwashEveryone should have a space that is personal to them and where they can go to think, unwind and generally relax. For many people, it may be their bedroom, a spare room in the house or even a sheltered spot in the garden but wherever is chosen, it’s vital that it is made to feel as friendly and inviting as possible. Because modern lifestyles are so hectic and demanding, there has never been a greater need for a tranquil bolt hole from everyday madness.

A space for relaxation should be instantly warm and welcoming. It should bring a sense of tranquillity to the individual immediately and evoke feelings of safety and emit a sense of peace. This personal space forms an escape from the everyday stresses for as long as is necessary. Care should be taken to ensure that the space is protected and secure especially if being used for meditation as complete peace and quiet is needed, so if there are children around, advise them that the space is off-limits and similarly, any phone in the room should be unplugged during that quiet time.

If using a room in the house, take a look around and see whether the furnishings are conducive to feelings of relaxation. If not, there may be things that you can do to increase those necessary feelings of ambiance at little cost. A cluttered space will not provide a relaxed environment so de-cluttering is an essential and actually quite therapeutic.

The room should be light and airy too with minimal furniture if possible to allow for freedom of movement and space.

Creams and beige colouring have a peaceful quality but essentially, the room can be decorated to suit that individual’s taste. In fact to personalize a room, it should mirror the user’s personality and this will allow them to take ownership of the space and to be able to enjoy their time there.

Pure essential oils can enhance a room immediately and as there are so many uplifting or relaxing essential oils, it will not be difficult to choose ones that suit any mood. For relaxation purposes, good old favourites such as Lavender or Geranium will not go amiss and for uplifting the spirits and mental clarity- Rosemary, Bergamot, Lemon or Clary Sage would be fine. Oils can be used in an oil burner quite safely and would provide an almost immediate benefit.

Equally, a private space in the garden can be incredibly inviting and care should be taken again to consider the appropriate environment first. A garden seat or bench is useful and shelter from rain is wise so that the space can be used in all-weathers. Consider any planting scheme carefully with a choice of colours that holds attention and appeals to the senses. Any plant fragrances will work to tease the senses and provide a greater response of peace and tranquillity. Whilst preparation can take some time, it is worth the time and effort because once the perfect space has been created, it will certainly aid any tension releases.

Be creative when choosing the right space, creativity is worth more than an extravagant splurge of money and it will mean more individually and become more welcoming and significant as a result. There is no need to restrict to one particular space either and this is of course dependant on the individual, but the garden, a room in the house, a favoured spot by a stream can all offer the same benefits some quality alone time in an aesthetically pleasing spot that soothes the senses and calms the frazzled mind.

Once any space is chosen or created then it’s important to use it as often as is required. Patterns of relaxation can be formed quite easily by using the space every day and if the same time of the day are chosen, then the body starts learning how to relax and this shaking off of any tensions begin the moment the room is used. This then becomes an instinctive response to relaxation.

When Times Get Tough

You need a 7 Day BrainwashWe’ve all been there at some point in our life. Everything seems to be moving along smoothly when something suddenly happens; a challenge, a barrier, a crisis. These events can range anywhere from being mildly inconvenient to downright terrible and sometimes devastating. When situations like this arise, we all have ultimately one choice to make how we will choose to respond.

When you boil it down, that is really how our entire life unfolds. We are making a never ending series of choices about how we will interact with the events and circumstances surrounding us. Many of these choices occur unconsciously as part of our conditioned behaviour patterns. Understanding that we always retain the power and the right to make a conscious choice about our reactions is where we can transform challenges into opportunities.

Consider the idea of personal perception. Every person observes and interprets the world around them from a unique vantage point. I remember very clearly an incident about 5 years ago when I was having lunch on a restaurant patio with a few of my colleagues. The patio was next to a very busy street. About 20 minutes into our meal, we were all startled by a large crash followed by an excitable YELP sound. As I turned in my seat to examine the incident, we saw a new sports car t-boned by an older sedan. Fortunately, the collision had taken place at a relatively slow speed so there were no injuries, just two very upset drivers. The YELP sound had come from a tow truck driver who had been parked literally across the street. He was so excited that an accident had occurred right in front of his truck meaning he would be the first tow provider on the scene. Talk about drastically opposing perspectives! These two unfortunate drivers were caught up in a very unpleasant experience while the tow truck entrepreneur had his latest gig essentially fall into his lap.

What’s most interesting about this example is that it illustrates to me that the world around us simply exists, nothing more, nothing less. It is not until we apply our personal perception along with all of our expectations and beliefs, that events become positive or negative. Since we are creative by nature and always have 100% control over our thoughts, we can then choose to seek out the positives in life. When something happens to us that initially appears to be negative, we have an opportunity to reject our habitual reaction and create a new, more empowering belief about that event.

I have personally made a habit of this type of mentality and I continue to develop this capability with every passing day. I am becoming someone who can cherish the tough times. When adversity strikes, I am often able to control my attitude and remain focused on the positive rather than being consumed by the apparent misfortune. I then remind myself of Robert Collier’s quote, “In every adversity there lies the seed of an equivalent advantage.”

Dustin Carter is no stranger to adversity. We recently featured his YouTube video on the Ignite Your Essence website. Dustin was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder at age 5. The doctors were forced to amputate the majority of all of his limbs. Despite his obvious challenges, Dustin is now a top student wrestler working towards a full wrestling scholarship. He is a tremendous inspiration to everyone who meets him and he gives hope to others who may be facing physical challenges.

Many successful entrepreneurs have been able to transform challenging life situations into business building opportunities. One of the best examples of this is Robert Allen. His book, Nothing Down: How to Buy Real Estate with Little or No Money Down, went to the top of the New York Times Best-Seller list after a controversial ad he ran to promote it. In the ad, Allen claimed that you could take him to any city, take his wallet away, give him $100 and he could buy a piece of real estate. After Allen’s book had achieved great success, a reporter from the LA Times challenged his claim in the ad and called him a fraud. In order to prove himself, Allen was forced to take the challenge and prove he could actually achieve the feat. Not knowing if he would actually be able to pull it off, Robert Allen began to worry and realized that he would be professionally ruined if he was not able to deliver. In a formally arranged meeting, the reporter met Allen in San Francisco, took his wallet and gave him $100. With his name and credibility on the line, Allen took the $100 and purchased 7 properties worth $700,000 in a 57 hour window. Needless to say, he went on to achieve enormous success in his career.

How would your life change if you were able to transform a negative event into a positive experience? What kind of results could you produce if you learned to embrace adversity and treat it as an opportunity for growth? Regardless of the nature of the challenge you are facing, decide to become the kind of person who embodies this philosophy and you will most assuredly begin to produce incredible things in your life while providing inspiration to those around you!

How to find motivation

You need a 7 Day BrainwashLearning what makes you tick on an individual level is so important. Once you have found the elixir of motivation, it makes sense to tap into it and to give yourself a kick-start if you start flagging.

You can start learning about yourself just through understanding what your biggest achievement has been to date and how you came to reach it.

Think long and hard about the following questions and take time to write down full-answers in response. Be honest with yourself when answering these questions-you may surprise yourself.

1. What is your biggest achievement to date?

2. How did you achieve your success?

3. During the process, what kept you going to the end goal?

4. How were you motivated?

5. How much did the end goal mean to you?

Once you have answered the questions, sit quietly and contemplate back to that time when you experienced that joyous sense of achievement.

Remember that people are motivated by very different things and what motivates one may not motivate another but your inner-most dreams have probably changed little and will have remained fairly constant throughout. What often happens is that people give up on these hopes and instead settle for something much less simply because it is easier and quicker.

The true dream, your true destiny may have taken a lot of hard work and patience and therefore was abandoned. This knowledge of taking the easy route may be an issue for you today.

From the following list, write down any that connects with your feelings:

-Do you seek recognition from others?

-Do you strive to make life better for your family?

-Do you need to prove to yourself that you can be someone important or achieve all of your goals for personal satisfaction?

-Do you feel that it’s important to do the right thing in life?

-Do you strive to increase your financial income?

-Do you have a passion in life and find it all-consuming?

-Was your childhood difficult and do you wish to ensure that your adult life is vastly improved?

-Is it important for you to take charge of your life and do something that matters?

-Do you need variety in life so embrace any changes?

-Does seeing your goals written down in black and white increase your determination to succeed?

You may find that several relate to how you feel personally so make a note of them and pin them up where you can see them so that they are a constant reminder of how you really feel.
