Share Your Goals for Success

You need a 7 Day BrainwashMost people have a laundry list of ideas, goals, dreams and aspirations for their life. There are so many things they want to do but life gets in the way. The days, months and years pass by and many of those ideas never see the light of day.

There is a little technique you can use, if you have the courage, that will almost guarantee the achievement of big goals and dreams. It is based on the idea of “social pressure”.

Think about this; let’s say you have a goal to lose a certain amount of weight or achieve some desired level of fitness. You can set the goal privately and tell yourself, “I am going to achieve this goal by August 1.” On the other hand, you can make the goal public by telling all of your friends and family what you intend to do and even give a date for your desired completion.

As soon as you take that goal public, you move into a different state of mind. No longer are you at the mercy of your own self-discipline (which has been tarnished by years of bad habits). Now you have a much more powerful force dictating your day to day actions and decisions.

Is this method too aggressive?

Perhaps you’re thinking, what if I declare this goal to everyone and then fail to achieve it? It is a valid concern but let’s look at it in more detail.

If you set your goal, tell everyone about it and work hard towards the goal, only to fall a bit short, you are still in a better position than you were before setting the goal. Your results will have improved to some degree. You can move forward and set new goals from there.

However, if you set the goal, tell everyone about it and then take no action towards the goal, you have now put yourself in an embarrassing position. In my opinion, I think the pain of an event like that might be just the fuel you need to motivate yourself into action the next time around.

If the goal or dream you are aspiring for is important enough to you, I think this exercise would be extremely valuable to you and your life.

So how do you apply this to your life? Start by grabbing a pen and paper and simply brainstorm all of the things you would like to accomplish. Have fun with it and let your mind wander. Then, look at the most time sensitive goals. For example, the goal of becoming an expert guitar player may take years while the goal of quitting smoking can happen in a matter of days or weeks.

Pick a short term goal, set a date, declare the goal publicly and start working on it. You’ll be amazed at what happens!

Use competition to push you

You need a 7 Day BrainwashI don’t know about you but when I am put in a position where I’m competing against one or more people, my motivation shoots up to a whole new level. I have talked to many others who experience the same.

When you compete against someone, in any area of life, you setup 2 incredibly powerful forces.

The first is the desire to be triumphant. Imagine the excitement someone must feel when they win a gold medal in the Olympics. They have achieved a personal dream and they get a flood of recognition from friends, family, media, fans and ultimately their entire country. What person would not love this kind of validation of success? The same kind of triumph can be experienced (maybe not at the same level of intensity) when you win a competition that you have been involved in, no matter how small it may be.

The second (and more powerful) force that gets created in competition is the desire to avoid defeat. Most humans instinctively associate any form of loss with pain and in most cases, will do anything necessary to avoid that pain. If you enter some kind of competition that will help drive you towards your goals, this pain avoidance force may be the deciding factor in your success.

Use competitive scenarios to drive you forward but remember to detach from the outcome. If you happen to lose your competition, don’t get down in the dumps. Focus on what positives came out of it (usually a drastic increase in results) and continue moving towards your goals.

What Are You Dedicating Your Life To?

You need a 7 Day BrainwashWhether you realize it or not, the way you choose to spend your day is ultimately a trade off. You

are literally trading the minutes, hours and days of your life in exchange for your current

activities. Most of us spend 40 (and often more) hours per week trading the precious moments of

our life for our job. Two questions immediately rise to the surface:

1. Do you consciously recognize and appreciate each day of your life with the awareness

that none of us know how much or how little time we have left?

2. If so, are you making a fair trade (i.e. are your activities worthy of your life energy)?

When I rst understood this lesson at both an intellectual and emotional level, my honest answer

to both of the above questions was NO! I was not necessarily taking my life for granted but I also

did not truly appreciate my days. I was devoting my time to a number of things that did not make

me happy and I was avoiding facing my fears. My mindset was I will deal with it at a better

time.’ Deep down I knew I was simply avoiding the issue altogether.

Speci cally, I am talking about my professional career. Although I was quite successful, had a

great salary, great security, excellent bene ts and room to grow in the organization, I did not

enjoy the work. I would start my day and look forward for it to be over. I did not work with any

passion. Worst of all, I was trading my life for this career.

Because this was the only profession I knew and spent many years establishing myself, it never

actually occurred to me that change was possible. I simply assumed that I would have to stick it

out and hopefully do well enough nancially so that I could retire early and THEN begin to

enjoy my days.

Then I got involved in personal development programs. I started to learn more about life and

more about the mind. I quickly realized that I had been operating my life following a set of

beliefs and paradigms that were not necessarily ideas that I agreed with. I had always assumed

that everyone disliked their job and it was just something we all had to go through to earn our

retirement’.

When I found out that there were many people who loved their work and had found a way to

make a living based on their passions, I was very intrigued. I was also wary of the idea because it

sounded too good to be true.

As I started to study some of these people and learn about the inspiring lives they were living, I

realized a very important distinction between them and myself. Unlike me at the time, they DID

appreciate the value of each living day and they also structured their life in such a way that they

were trading their days for a purpose worthy of them and their true values.

When I compared them to myself, I was trading the days of my life for something that made me

unhappy. When I dissected it further, I was choosing this lifestyle because I was too afraid to

change. I was afraid to give up the salary and bene ts, afraid to give up the position that took so

many years to obtain, afraid to admit to others that I was unhappy and afraid to decide what I

truly wanted out of life.

The more I thought about it and the more I studied personal development teachings and success

stories, the greater my desire for change became. I started to reprogram my mind so that the pain

of remaining status quo was actually more intense than the fear of change. I know many personal

growth programs advocate positive thinking, but negative motivators inspire action for all of us.

It certainly worked in my case.

Not only did this new mindset drive me to nd my true passion and true calling in life (speaking

and coaching), it helped me establish a sense of personal freedom that can best be described as

liberation. There came a point where my self image literally shifted and I saw myself safely and

con dently walking away from the career that I had so desperately held onto for many years.

The days of my life were far too important and valuable to be spending them doing something

that had no meaning for me. After I resigned from that position, I made a personal commitment

to dedicate the rest of my working days doing only that which I love.

I now love my work. I look forward to my days. I look forward to new projects and new

opportunities. I never think about retirement because I never plan on retiring. When you do what

you love, why would you ever want to stop?

How the law of attraction can help your career

You need a 7 Day BrainwashThose of you who are searching for a job may find it impossible to find one which suits you. Is this because such a job does not exist, or is it because in your subconscious mind you believe that you will not be able to find a job, and consequently are releasing so much negative energy out into the universe that you are actually driving those jobs away?

Anyone who has ever tried to search for a job (or known somebody who has) knows that you have a drastically improved chance of finding employment when you are already employed elsewhere than if you are unemployed. For someone who has lost their job and is currently unemployed it may seem easier to climb Mount Everest than to get that first all-important interview. It seems as though nobody is interested in what they have to offer.

Why is this? It’s certainly not because there are no employment opportunities out there; many people manage to find jobs relatively easily and some even hold down two or three different jobs. Why, then, do people suffer from unemployment for months or even years at a time?

The answer to that is they often believe they will not be able to find a job, and consequently they have stopped trying. In their subconscious minds they do not truly believe that any of their efforts will work, and so they are projecting that negative thought energy out to the universe.

On the other hand, an individual who already has a job is secure and confident in their ability to find a job and do it well; after all, someone has obviously thought them worthy enough to hire them (and keep them) in the first place, and chances are if they are searching for a new job it is because they are confident enough in their abilities that they believe they deserve a job that will treat them better/pay them more/provide more stimulating work/etc.

Since they are projecting this positive energy out, they will be drawing in positive energy as well, attracting the job that they truly want.

Chances are that you too are looking for more from your career than you have right now. If you are still seeking that dream job, simply state your intention; ask the universe for it, imagine yourself in your dream job, feel as thought you have it, believe that it is yours and then sit back and wait, secure in the knowledge that the law of attraction will bring it into your life. It might not be today, it might not exactly how you expected, but it will happen.

Maybe you are satisfied with the job you have but you are seeking a promotion; after all, no one wants to be at the bottom of the career ladder forever.

In order to get the promotion you are dreaming about the first thing you must do is remove any doubt from your mind. Walk into the interview one hundred percent sure that the position is yours; remember, if you are still living with the belief that the position may be above you and you are not certain that you have the necessary skills to fill it then you are absolutely right. On the other hand, if you believe that the position is yours and you do have the necessary skills to do a good job, you are also right! So what is your reality going to be?

If you have ever gone to high school you have probably received advice on what to do and what not to do in an interview. One of the biggest don’ts in interviewing protocol is to let the interviewer see that you are nervous. By showing the interviewer that you have confidence in your ability to handle any job which they throw at you, you are increasing your value as an employee in their eyes.

The same can be said of any attempts to open a business. It is essential when approaching prospective investors that you have one hundred percent confidence in yourself and your business in order to guarantee that they will be willing to take a chance on you.

Is this need for absolute confidence a coincidence only, or is it the law of attraction at work? By having confidence in your abilities you are sending positive energy out into the universe, and consequently drawing the positive energies currently existing in the universe back to you.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of sending out positive thought vibrations as often as you can. The release of positive thought energy into the universe is what allows you manifest your dream life rather than just drifting and accepting whatever comes your way because you don’t feel that you can change it.

Doing yoga to deal with stress

You need a 7 Day BrainwashYoga can be a great aid to help in the fight against stress. Hugely popular, it is far more than the exercise system that many people think it is. Because it is so gentle on the body, with each movement (asana) being considered and focussed upon before the move is attempted, it is slow, peaceful and relaxing and in a way, utilises many of the techniques of meditation.

Yoga is not about stressing out the body to achieve some of the more advanced moves that is often linked to yoga practice; it is about the individual working at their own pace and achieving many benefits and progressing at a pace that suits.

Stretching helps to relieve any tension that is held within individual muscle groups and the postures work on improving muscle strength and flexibility. Don’t forget that stress doesn’t just impact people mentally and emotionally but muscles store tension too. Other benefits include improved lung capacity (with regular yogic breathing techniques) and a sharper more positive focus and a sense of inner peace and calmness.

Ideally, attending a local class is highly beneficial as the teacher can ensure that the body alignment is in the correct position but there are many excellent yoga DVD’s, books or articles that can be sourced on the Internet. With so many styles to choose from, there literally is a style to suit everyone and the health and stress management benefits are far-reaching.

Once peace and inner contentment is established, meditation can be incorporated within the sessions and this increases the benefits further.

A regular daily practice of twenty minutes is sufficient at first.

Determine a Definite Major Purpose (DMP) for your life

In my opinion, the most important step anyone can take in the development of themselves and in the development of their potential is to determine a Definite Major Purpose (DMP) for their life!

If you really think about it, the most successful people in the world do this instinctively. Some of them may be well aware of the importance of having a major purpose in life while others just happen to stumble upon their purpose and never give it a second thought before diving in.

What are some of the characteristics of a DMP?

-It is work you would do whether or not you were paid

-It is something you have passion for

-It is something that YOU believe to be very important

-When you hold the vision of yourself engaged in your DMP, you feel excitement and joy

-It is work that you would like to be remembered for…Your LEGACY!

Why is it, then, that so few people ever find a DMP for their life? Why do we see so many people who don’t enjoy their days and spend all of their time wishing for something more?

From my experiences with coaching clients and with my seminar audiences, one of the most obvious pain points I notice is the fact that many people have not decided what they WANT out of life.

This is not surprising. For the majority of us, from a very young age we were conditioned to follow instructions, do what others told us to do and listen to outside opinions. So we did. We did what we thought we were supposed to do. Our own wants and desires in life took a back seat to what were “supposed” to be doing to establish a safe and secure future.

For many folks, a critical assumption had been made in their life and it translated to a mindset of lack and personal limitation. The assumption is that I cannot make a living doing what I love to do.’

By assuming this statement as an absolute truth, we see millions of people in our society accepting the fact’ that their dreams in life are unrealistic. Many people file these dreams in a

memory bank for safe keeping with the hope that one day, in the distant future, they will be in a position to be, do or have their heart’s desire.

If you happen to fall into the above category, or even if you don’t, I would like you to consider the following question:

“If you had all of the resources, money, self esteem, confidence and personal power to accomplish anything, what would you do?”

This is a powerful question to ask yourself because you are really talking about a higher purpose. You are searching for the answer to the following question, “What was I put on this earth to do?”

The exciting and empowering realization is that we all decide what our purpose is. It is literally up to us to decide what we want to do, what we want to dedicate our life to, find our own reasons for doing so and then pursue it.

OK, so figuring out your DMP in life isn’t exactly a trivial task. In fact, it took me 7 months of reading, studying, meditation, having discussions with people close to me and lots of introspection to finally decide I wanted to be a personal development speaker and success coach. Now, during this time period I certainly had an idea about what I wanted and the path I was on but I did not make a firm decision and set a clear goal (HINT for Lesson 2) until my 7th month of searching.

The point is, do not be alarmed, frustrated, overwhelmed or anxious if you don’t know what your DMP is. In fact, GET EXCITED by the fact that you are, starting TODAY, on a personal MISSION to figure out what it is you WANT out of life!
