Some people have a lot of internal drive and seem to be motivated all of the time. Other people struggle with their energy and enthusiasm levels and it becomes more difficult for these people to really get the most out of their days. Even the most driven person can experience down times and it is important to know how to pull yourself out of these kind of ruts.
Here are 4 powerful techniques that you can use to raise your energy and lift your spirits when you feel a lack of motivation.
Audio immersion. This is a technique that I have seen a number of people use in a variety of ways. The general idea is to combine inspirational music with some form of physical movement. As an example, you might want to find a song that really makes you come alive. A song that you like to sing along with. Turn the volume up a little. Then, as the song is playing, grab a pen and paper and begin writing down powerful statements to yourself.
You might write words like “I am energized”, “I have supreme confidence”, “I am incredibly productive”, “I have undying power” or any other statements that resonate with you. You can also shout these sayings out loud but I prefer the pen and paper method because you can’t always shout out loud, especially if other people are around you. This method is a sure fire way to increase your energy and motivation levels.
Positive and Negative Drivers. This technique involves analyzing very personal things about yourself that impact your emotions. The idea here is to list as many things as you can think of that cause you to feel drive. For example, you might have a goal of running a marathon but you have not had the drive or motivation to go on a run. You would rather lie on the couch.
In order to get yourself off of the couch, you would start by listing all of the positive things would result if you were to go for a run. This might include things like increased energy, happiness because you are proud of yourself, excitement of moving towards your marathon goal and of course contentment that you are preserving your health.
At the same time, you would also list all of your negative motivators. Things that might occur if you DON’T commit to your running goals. This might include things like self let-down for not sticking to your objectives, reduced energy or even proving your doubters to be right (this can be a huge one). When you combine the positive drives with the negative drivers, your energy and motivation levels can’t help but to be impacted and improved upon.
Comedy and Movement. This is a technique that I use all of the time and when I show other people, they really enjoy it. The idea is to combine the good feelings of comedy and laughter with the increased energy brought about by body movement.
There is no “right” way to do this so I will illustrate with an example. Go to youtube and search for a comedian or clips from a funny show that always makes your laugh. Even if your mood is really low at this point, simply watch the clip with no expectations for instant mood enhancement. You are simply observing at this point. Watch the clip twice if need be. Then, search for a second comedy clip and simply cue it up. Don’t play it yet.
After the first clip is finished, stand up, move your chair out of the way and do some kind of fast body movement. This can be anything that gets your heart pumping (leg raises, jumping jacks, shadow boxing, etc…). Do this for a minimum of one minute.
Once your mini exercise session is done, return to your computer and watch the second comedy clip. You will find your energy level rising and you will very likely have an easy time laughing at this clip. Repeat this process a few times if need be.
These 3 techniques may seem basic on the surface but can have a huge impact on your life. Experiment with them and see how it can improve your energy and motivation levels.
Visualizations are powerful ways of releasing stress and to conjure up happier and perhaps more peaceful times for the individual. The techniques (first stage towards meditation) can take a little while to perfect and this varies from person to person but they can be used to suit the individual’s needs. They can be done at any time of the day or night for any length of time, but initially, five or ten minutes may be all that can be sustained without conscious thought interrupting the visualization.
When the individual is about to commence a visualization, it’s important to ensure that the phone is unplugged and that they are unlikely to be disturbed.
Visualization A Beautiful Scene
With eyes closed, it’s important to focus intently on any moment in time where happiness was experienced. This can often be the birth of a child, marriage or simply a moment where pure contentment was reached. To be able to picture the scene completely, it’s important to become part of the scene using memories so that it feels real. In a way, the moment becomes freeze framed for the individual to step into and experience at will.
The Box Visualization
When problems get too much and sleep is interrupted as a result, the best way for any individual to cope with them is to use the Box Visualization’ as this affords a great deal of control over any areas of concern.
When lying down and with eyes closed, imagine the actual problem and make the visualization as clear as possible before mentally shrinking it down to tiny proportions. Mentally place the problem in a box and put the lid on it. Practice makes perfect with this technique and if the problem still plagues during the visualization, it’s important to stay focussed and to keep placing the problem back into the box.
This repetitive action gives you power over the situation. Wrap the box, tape it so that it is secure and then mentally drop the box containing the problem over a bridge and into a fast flowing river. It can be very therapeutic to watch the problem being swept away and will certainly aid sleep as a result.
This can be repeated as many times as is necessary but it’s an excellent tool to help avoid any problems from disturbing sleep. With a full night’s sleep, any problems will look much less concerning anyway.
For the past 3 years, I have spent most of my time developing my business and along the way, have had to overcome a number of fears and self-limiting ideas. What I was really doing was reprogramming my mind to think differently.
Here are 3 techniques you might want to try that will help you reprogram yourself to a new and improved YOU:
1. Hang out with an influencer.
When I first got started in business, I was struggling to pay the bills and find enough clients to keep me going. Even when I did find clients, I did a terrible job billing for my time and I was not recognizing my own value as a service provider.
I was then lucky enough to meet another business owner who had built a number of successful companies and had already been through all of the tough business lessons that I had yet to be exposed to. Over time we became friends and I was able to absorb an incredible amount of information about business, mindset, dealing with clients, social skills, etc… all of the things that made him so talented at business.
The challenge here is that you can’t just walk up to someone and ask them to be your friend. When you meet someone who you would like to learn from, show them that you value their time and bring something of your own to the table. If they feel they can also learn from you and your life experiences, they will be far more willing to hang out with you.
2. Wage a war against the whiny voice in your head.
Have you ever had an idea that totally captivated your imagination and inspired you to think about a life far beyond the one you are living today? If so, were you also among the majority of people who had that cynical, whiny, negative voice pop up and immediately tell you all the reasons why this new idea could never come true?
Instead of falling victim to that defeating voice, try turning the tables. Picture that voice as a vicious enemy trying to steal your life, power and happiness away from you. Challenge the voice. Question its authenticity. Question its reasoning. Make it powerless against your will.
Realize that you have the choice to replace that voice with a more encouraging, faithful and friendly one. A voice that will consider your goal not just a possibility, but a probability. A voice that does not look externally for validation before taking action, but rather, uses self-belief as its driving force. A voice that realizes that any person who has ever achieved greatness had to do so against similar odds and that all things are possible to those who commit to their vision.
3. Get the competitive edge.
When you want to accomplish something new, try setting up a competition against one or more people who want the same thing. This creates two powerful forces.
The first is the desire to be triumphant. Imagine the excitement someone must feel when they win a gold medal in the Olympics. They have achieved a personal dream and they get a flood of recognition from friends, family, media, fans and ultimately their entire country. What person would not love this kind of validation of success? The same kind of triumph can be experienced when you win a competition that you have been involved in, no matter how small it may be.
The second (and more powerful) force that gets created in competition is the desire to avoid defeat. Most humans instinctively associate any form of loss with pain and in most cases, will do anything necessary to avoid that pain. If you enter some kind of competition that will help drive you towards your goals, this pain avoidance force may be the deciding factor in your success.
Use competitive scenarios to drive you forward but remember to detach from the outcome. If you happen to lose your competition, don’t get down in the dumps. Focus on what positives came out of it (usually a drastic increase in results) and continue moving towards your goals.
This past month, my wife and I have started sending our 2 sons to public daycare. The 1 year old is too young to understand what is going on so he is always happy to be there. The 3 year old, on the other hand, has been having a very difficult time in the mornings. As soon as we get in the car, he starts crying and it gets progressively more intense as we get closer to the daycare. By the time we are in his classroom, he is in a near panic, screaming and drawing intense stares from the other parents and staff. Within seconds of me leaving, he completely calms down and gets absorbed with some fun new activity that he would not have been able to experience at home.
Witnessing this really drove home a new realization for me. We all have the ability to experience happiness (or any other positive emotion for that matter) at any time we choose to do so. The advantage with children is that they let go very quickly and have a much easier time living in the moment.
I started thinking more about how most adults handle these kinds of situations, myself included, and in the majority of cases it takes a much longer time to move from a depressed state to one of positivity and happiness.
I can think of many times in my life where I spent an entire day in a negative state carrying around a grudge about something that happened many hours (or even days) prior. At the time, I didn’t even realize that I had control over the situation. Complete victim mentality.
Having spent a number of years working on my own personal development, I now experience far more happy and positive moments than negative ones. But I think it is only human to have times when the doom and gloom creeps in. My new strategy when dealing with these circumstances is to literally think like a 3 year old.
As an example, a few weeks ago I was expecting payment from a client with whom I made an agreement to offer a monthly payment plan. This was something I did more as a favor than a standard policy. When the client ignored my first, then second payment request, I felt myself becoming extremely frustrated. In the past, an event like this might have soured my mood, and in turn my productivity for the entire day (if not longer). I used the opportunity to literally picture myself as the 3 year old easily moving from one moment of devastation to a brand new moment of fun and opportunity. Instead of picking up a coloring book or a new toy fire truck, I picked up my laptop and began working on an exciting new project that I was involved in. My mood shifted immediately. I then took it up a notch with some inspiring music and before I knew it I was feeling amazing and very excited about my day.
I have still not been paid by that client but I’m okay with that now. The new project that I got involved in has already more than paid for the unpaid bill from my deficient client and I’m having a lot more fun with what I’m doing now.
Next time you are feeling overwhelmed by negativity, frustration, anger or depression, try remembering what it was like as a kid when you could experience pure happiness at any moment you chose to do so!
First, think of something that brings you strong emotions and feelings of happiness, such as a relationship, special memory or your pet. Keep thinking about it until you can feel the joy of it spread throughout your entire body. Use your senses- imagine what it feels like, sounds like, smells like etc.
Now, in your truly happy state, visualize what it is you want to manifest and see it as if you already have it- see yourself parking your car in the space you want to manifest, feel the satisfaction of knowing you don’t have a long walk to your destination, imagine yourself leaving your car, knowing it is perfectly safe. The more vividly you can imagine it and the more positive you feel whilst doing so, the more powerful this exercise will be.
When you have held this feeling for several seconds- you will be able to hold this longer with practice- say out loud I am so happy and grateful now that ‘ and fill in your intention, for example I am so happy and grateful now that I have parked my car in the space of my choice’.
Now release it to the universe and forget about parking. You must trust that the universe will deliver your intention to you- don’t let doubts creep in and start to question it as all you will achieve is to push it away.
This is the basics for attracting anything into your life. A simple intention such as a parking space should manifest relatively quickly, but for more complex intentions, such as a new car, you will need to allow a lot more time.
“What you cannot enforce, do not command.”
“No general can fight his battles alone. He must depend upon his lieutenants, and his success depends upon his ability to select the right man for the right place.”
“To do great things is difficult; but to command great things is more difficult.”
“It is absurd that a man should rule others, who cannot rule himself. (Absurdum est ut alios regat, qui seipsum regere nescit.)”
“Let him who would be moved to convince others, be first moved to convince himself.”
“A good general not only sees the way to victory; he also knows when victory is impossible.”
“Any one can hold the helm when the sea is calm.”
“I am only one, But still I am one. I cannot do everything, But still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”
Edward Everett Hale
“Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.”
“Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.”
“You can’t do anything about the length of your life, but you can do something about its width and depth.”
“Well done is better than well said.”
“If the world seems cold to you, kindle fires to warm it.”
If you have a positive attitude, you will find it much easier to manifest your desires, as you will be naturally giving out positive emotional thought vibrations which will attract positive things to you. Even if you are not consciously trying to manifest something, your positive attitude will naturally attract more things to be positive about and you will be one of those people who seem to attract endless good fortune.
Try to remain positive at all times. This doesn’t mean you can never feel down or can never again have a good old moan, but you have to make your natural state as positive and as upbeat as possible. Get out of the habit of complaining about certain situations in your life. Stop any negative self talk, such as Oh I’ll never be able to do that’. Expect that good things will happen to you and that every outcome will be positive.
If something unwanted happens, try to see a positive side to it if you can. For example, if you moan that every time you have a little extra money, your car needs repairs or you receive an unexpected bill, try turning it around and start being thankful that you have the extra money to allow you to pay for these unexpected expenses.
I heard about someone whose car required so many repairs it was not economically worth repairing. He couldn’t afford to replace it, so decided he would have to go without a car until he had saved the money for a new one. He started cycling to work, and after a few months realized that he had lost two stones in weight and was enjoying cycling so much he decided to take it up competitively. So from not being able to afford a new car, he became fit and healthy and found a new hobby!
Always get into the habit of looking for the positive side to your problems.
Unfortunately our natural state is to feel either negative or at best in a state of what I call flat- neither unhappy but not particularly great either. It is very difficult to attract positive things into your life by feeling flat, as you are shutting yourself off from vibrating at a higher level; these vibrations flow best when you are feeling happy, positive and good about yourself.
Do more of the things that bring you joy, for whenever you feel joy, happiness and love you are connected most strongly to your higher self. Chat to your partner, laugh with your children, stroke or play with your pet. Meet up with a friend for coffee and have a laugh. Listen to your favorite music, or music that calms, relaxes or inspires you, or watch a television show that motivates you or makes you laugh.
Place pictures of your family, your pets or of you enjoying a favorite hobby around your home and place of work. Looking at them should help you to feel instantly more positive and full of love.
Exercise can be a great mood lifter. Even a gentle walk can raise your spirits and boost your energy levels.
Nobody can feel happy all of the time, although feeling upbeat becomes easier the more you practice it, but start by finding things to feel great about in your life; laugh more, moan less, hang around with positive, upbeat people and try to avoid negative folk. Expect that things will turn out well and that if you experience a problem you will find a solution. Expect good things to come your way!
Not only will you start to attract many more good things than bad into your life, but you will be much more open to receiving your intentions.
It can be very hard to make important decisions about how to change your life if your whole life is feeling cluttered. You might be feeling overwhelmed by feelings of bewilderment, that life is passing you by and you might not know which way to turn to make important changes that will ultimately improve your life in the long term.
Maybe you just long for a simple life? Perhaps your life is too fast-paced and you have no time to think, let alone plan or dream for your future? Maybe you struggle from one situation to another because you lack the clarity needed to resolve certain issues?
There is no shame in feeling that your life is unfulfilled in terms of the envisaged potential or that you have been swallowed up in the murky depths of uncertainty, there is shame however in not doing anything to get yourself out of it, because the solution isn’t as difficult as you might think.
There is no doubt about it. Clutter causes additional stress and it can prevent you from having feelings of clarity about your situation. Take a good look around you and see if you can detect things that have been cluttering up the house and yet have not been needed in months or even years. Are there things that you could give away which would free up your home and might be of real benefit to others?
Clearing clutter is not easy. Often we bond with possessions that bring us no real happiness and yet we stubbornly refuse to let go of them. To be able to de-clutter, you need to have one hard and fast rule, get rid of those items that have been lying around or have not been used within the last two years. The moment that you spot something, package it up ready to give it away. Be ruthless. Surprisingly, once you get started, you will find it very cathartic.
You will be amazed at how much stuff you have harboring in your wardrobe and how much of your clothes may no longer fit or is no longer in style. Try on any clothes that in your mind still have potential but be realistic, if you haven’t worn those clothes in a few years, you are not likely to.
Work your way through the whole house in this manner and feel a real sense of achievement once you are finally de-cluttered and have room to grow and to live.
Over the years, I have read hundreds of books, listened to hundreds of tapes and attended dozens of courses – all to discover the secrets of using my mind to bring me peace, happiness and to manifest into physical reality what it is I think I want at the time. With each new discovery, I have been excited sometimes to the point of bursting, and I can’t wait to tell all my friends and just about anyone who will listen to the latest key to success I have discovered.
And guess what they say?
“You can’t do that!”
“That will never work!”
“If that was true, how come everyone doesn’t do it?”
And so on. Not all of them, but by far the majority. Suddenly I am on the defensive, but ultimately the shiny new discovery is tarnished, enthusiasm wanes. I doubt.
Today I have made a new discovery on the road to peace, happiness and material wealth, and I am going to share it with you. It is this: Keep your counsel.
If you don’t, people will knock your dreams down like the tide over sand castles. They don’t mean to. They think they’re being kind. They don’t want to see you hurt. But the truth is, they’ve settled for living with disappointment. They’ve been hurt by life and they think that’s all there is.
Dream big, my friends, as big as you like. But dream secret. And when those dreams come true and your friends all ask how you did it, you can tell them:
“Just lucky, I guess.”
